My favorite character so far is the head of the coal miners

An intelligent and no nonsense guy, who stands up to the minister with the two armed soldiers.
"Go ahead and shoot. You don't have enough bullets to kill all of us." And then he pats the minister on his baby blue suit, and all the other miners do the same thing. Then someone remarks "Now you look like the coal minister."

Then when offered a filter mask at Chenobyl he responds, "If they worked, you'd be wearing them." My kind of guy.

Then he said he wanted fans because it was 50 degrees C in the tunnel. I was shocked when I googled it and discovered that's 122 degrees F!

He's The Man!

Unfortunately, he'll probably die of radiation poisoning fairly soon.

reply

Yes, unfortunately.

That can probably be said for almost every character we see, minus the Gorbachev meeting room, although they are sitting right next to 2 heavily exposed characters.

Agreed, He was great. πŸ‘

I liked the character but I think the scene with the two armed soldiers wasn't very realistic;

1. The guy didn't look like a minister of anything but rather a teenager who put a suit for his prom night;
2. He had zero assurance;
3. He would have had more then two guards if he was expecting confrontation or none at all if he did not expect it;
4. I doubt he would have confronted the miners in the open but rather talk to the head miners alone;
5. Maybe they are proud and Don't care for a bullet, but it's soviet union, they know there would be retaliations on their families if they threaten a minister.

A little cartoonish but probably intended in an otherwise very serious and tough serie.

It's Hollyweird.

Did they really shoot people for non capital offenses? If so, no wonder the Evil Empire
crumbled in 1991!

😎

reply

No but just about anything in the Soviet era could become a capital offence :)

reply

It truly was, as Reagan said, The Evil Empire.

Before 1960 yeah but in 1980's they probably would not shoot them for refusing to work. However, the confrontation was escalating and the miners were suggesting they would assault the minister/guards and that even if they shot, they would be short of bullets and the remaining miners would kill the minister/guards. It's clearly a threat to kill which, even with no actual physical violence, would end with a trial, even in the west. I Don't think death penalty was an option in USSR for such an offense at that time though.

However, retaliations can take many forms, not necessarily death penalty. They would be most likely sent to labor or reeducation camps, simply lose their jobs and be prevented to find any good ones, be harassed, etc. All of that could happened not only to them but to their families. It could be very hard there if you didn't follow the state line.

The real minister of coal was a hardcore miner veteran himself, so I doubt that interaction took place ever.

"What's as big as a house, burns 20 liters of fuel every hour, puts out a shitload of smoke and noise, and cuts an apple into 3 pieces?

A soviet machine made to cut apples into FOUR pieces!"

GREATEST.LINE.EVER.

reply

Was that line in Chernobyl? If so, I missed it. And it is a great line.

😎

reply

Did you watch the show?

reply

Yes, of course I did. Why do you ask?

😎

reply

Because the line was very memorable. How did you miss it?

reply

Maybe more memorable to you than to me. And remember, you're asking me about one line in five hours of the program. I bet I could find a line that you forgot.

😎

reply

No, I transcribed every single line so that I would be ready for this moment. TRY ME!

reply

LOL! Can't fight that.

😎

reply

Yes it was a great joke. I thought it was gonna suck but it made me laugh.

reply

That joke he tells in the series is pretty much everything you need to know about Socialism.

reply

Yes indeed!

A Russian-Scot?

reply

Yes imho the miners were the biggest hero's as they prevented the catastrophic result of the meltdown.

reply

Yes, them and the engineers who went under the reactor to open the drain valves.
