Entertaining, far from Prescient but refreshingly self-aware
Spike Lee in telling the story of Ron Stallworth now could have been a foreshadowing of the present climate if it were told 5 years earlier.
In the theater I was in there was indeed laughter but it was always tempered against the stark reality of what was happening in trying to take the "Organization" and it's ideas mainstream. This was a well done passion piece by Spike and all of the actors who bought in and delivered great performances.
I really enjoyed the parallel snippets of life and POV's of the two sides. There is a point where the Police Commander is doing a threat assessment of both groups after hearing about potential acts of violence and both are deemed not credible. The false equivalency of the two groups was jarring for me as much then as it is today.
I saw it last Saturday and I am still thinking about the movie.
