What seems more likely to you? That a mentally unstable man could hook up with the attractive neighbour, after stalking her (which she was aware of), and forcing himself on her (which she was ok with), or that they hardly interacted and she barely knew who he was?

Isn't that pretty much the simplest interpretation? Other than he and Murray sharing a moment on stage together at the beginning, and his relationship with Sophie, the entire movie likely all happened exactly as we saw it (especially since he's laughing at Bruce standing over his parents' corpses at the end.)
