Could Have Been a Better Movie If.... (Spoiler)

His relationship.with his neighbour was Real.

I really thought that was an interesting and actually quite believable turn in the movie, and they should have kept it as real.... Felt like a cop out for it to be a fantasy.

The relationship.would have been a big key in giving him the confidence to become The Joker etc.

Nah, it fits Arthur's incompetence better if the only way he could get together with someone and have a stable, happy relationship if he imagined it.

Even if they HAD been a real couple, it would have still ended in tragedy. She would have died in a horrific accident (similar to how The Joker's wife did in the comics), or fallen in love with someone else, and left Arthur feeling completely broken either way.

reply

For him to have that relationship feels like too much of a good thing for him considering his descent into madness/evil. It would lend stability to a man whose arc is that he is increasingly becoming more unstable and corrupt, hence why he imagined such a scenario in the first place.

The way he imagined it, is it even that believable how they'd hook up? She'd be fine with the creepy neighbour stalking her and developing a sexual relationship with him soon after that?

reply

If nothing else, at least the phony imagined relationship with the neighbor makes it all the more likely that his mothers relationship with Bruce Wayne too was imagined.

reply

You mean Thomas Wayne?

reply

no, Thomas Wayne seems like the type who would sleep with the help and then cover it up (at least in this movie).

reply

I'm of another mind about keeping the relationship real rather than imagined.
From the outset, I couldn't really see how that neighbor would like him. It seemed too unrealistic. She was young and pretty, and to be honest, he was pretty creepy and unattractive.

reply

yeah, it didn't work as is. But if she were needier and he had used some psychological manipulation on her, it would have shown he had some future Joker type skills, and boosted his confidence.

That was the biggest problem with the movie really, you didn't see the genius level intellect the Joker needs.

reply

I agree.

First: the whole “it was all in his mind” plot twist is so lame at this point. Maybe for Fight Club and Sixth Sense but at this point ...

Second: it would’ve made a convincing heartbreak that drove Joker into full madness. (A little hard to believe but hey sometimes single mothers lower their bar) Even the slightest possibility of a loving relationship might’ve given Fleck some hope that he could be happy and fit in with everyone else.

reply

If Cesar Romero had played the Joker.

Today's DC would probably blew all the budget in their effort to digitally remove his moustache.
