In season one Johnny was just trying to turn his life around by starting a karate business. It was Daniel who escalated everything. He couldn't be happy for his old classmate. He had to make assumptions and nearly all those assumptions were wrong.

Yes. I think it was the idea of Cobra Kai he was against.
