Kreese wasn't needed, but I liked the idea of showing how that style of teaching can turn good people into monsters. At the end, Johnny realizes the negative transformation of his students as he gets to see it from the outside looking in, and he also sees the positive transformation of his own son under Daniel's style of teaching. I liked how they gave Johnny the victory over Daniel at the tournament so Johnny could have that moment, but also to show how his evolution has sapped the joy out of that victory.
It ended up being a way more interesting series than I thought it would be. Daniel turned out to be a creep, though a successful one as his style of teaching is still on point with Miyagi's. Johnny turned out to be a relatively ordinary guy with a desire to live in the past during his glory days, but that past brings with it a style of teaching that doesn't necessarily breed success. It's an interesting dynamic, and I think they pulled it off well.
I'd like to see it move forward with Johnny continuing to realize the flaws of his teaching, and Daniel realizing his personal flaws that can come from having too much success.
