I just wonder why would anyone want to make us such a creep-o story? Most people from our grandparents' generation would be so sick that this is average fare for moviegoers in this era.

Those were more enlightened times. Steve Allen and The Dancing Chimpanzee were considered the height of comedy, paint was overloaded with lead, white cotton panties were as sexy as lingerie got, and racial segregation kept the pale faces and the coloreds in their proper places. Not that dramatic, but the goofy stuff was in good fun, and did not have massive media manipulations behind it. You look at food and how junk it has gotten, but it is the same with media. Not that you cannot find good food or good media, but the garbage stuff has created the mass of people whose lives center around this garbage. There didn't used to be enough BS for people to dedicate their lives to.

Media like The Star Wars franchise, most of the MCU/DCU, and Jurassic Park fall into the realm of movies and TV you describe, brux. The Black Phone, for all of it's flaws, at least tries to be something original and non-fluff
