The real stuntman, hitchhikers, damaged car; another Manson family murder
In this film, James Landry Hébert plays 'Clem', the guy at Spahn ranch who damaged Rick Dalton's car and was beaten up by stuntman Cliff Booth and forced to fix it. In real life, the Manson family socialized and briefly lived with Beach Boy Dennis Wilson (after he had picked up two of the women hitchhiking.) Steve "Clem" Grogan crashed Wilson's uninsured Ferrari, while racing outside of Spahn's Ranch. http://www.cielodrive.com/steven-grogan.php
Dennis Wilson introduced Manson to a few friends in the music business, including the Byrds' producer Terry Melcher, whose home at 10050 Cielo Drive would later be rented by director Roman Polanski and his wife, actress Sharon Tate. (Manson initially went to the house on March 23, 1969 looking for Melcher, long before the August 8, 1969 murders.) After a threat, Wilson beat up Manson and distanced himself. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manson_Family
Donald "Shorty" Shea (who was six foot 4 inches) was a Spahn Ranch stuntman and horse wrangler, who had aspired to be an actor in westerns. Shea was killed approximately ten days after an August 16, 1969, sheriff's raid on the Spahn ranch (for a stolen car ring.) Manson suspected that Shea helped set up the raid, and believed that stuntman Shea was trying to get Spahn to run the Manson Family off the ranch. Manson and family members Bruce Davis and Steve "Clem" Grogan were found guilty of Shea's murder.
Another motive for the murder could have stemmed from a fight between Charles Manson and Shea... Windy Bucklee, the wife of Spahn Ranch ranch hand Randy Starr was beaten by Charles Manson for her refusal to loan her truck to Manson and Bill Vance for robberies. In the days prior, law enforcement questioned Bucklee for a string of robberies that her truck had been identified in... When stuntman Shea found out about Manson assaulting Bucklee, he.. assaulted both Manson and Vance with threats to stay away from Spahn Ranch. After Manson moved into Spahn Ranch, one of the newer members of the Manson Family was caught spying on Shea for Manson. Shea and others stripped him naked and tied him to a tree facing the main road to send a message to the others. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Shea
Steve "Clem" Grogan was the only family member who got released on parole, in 1985. He drew a map for authorities to find Shea's body. Clem had hit Shea in the head with a pipe wrench. But Clem later said in prison that Charles “Tex” Watson actually murdered Shea, and that Manson was not even there. So as Tex Watson continues to seek parole, those who want him to remain locked up should use this testimony to get Watson charged and convicted of the Shea murder. https://www.mansondirect.com/sgrogan.html (Source: Parole Hearing)
