I have been trying to remember the first word they mentioned. In the shot where he was holding the girl hostage he said something like "they call them the Louisville Lancers" (except it wasn't Louisville. I can't remember the first word but it began with L). The girl said "that isn't funny". Then he repeated the term and she said "oh yeah that is pretty funny".

Why was it funny? Didn't strike me as funny.

In a film full of references, this was a reference to a famous film: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0026643/reference

The pun was that the guy's name was also Lancer.
