Yes, they're smart, but so smart they can hear through sub-aquatic glass (3-5 inches thick?), understand human English, and the contrivances of a plot to destroy them, then go feed that back to the other sharks and formulate a revenge plan!

Don't forget these sharks are supposed to be superior in every way so they are beyond smart and when Belle was watching them through the glass, there is no doubt in my mind that she was able to read their lips because let's face it, every smart shark should be able to do something of that magnitude and therefore she ultimately knew that the sharks were going to be destroyed at some point, so Belle couldn't have that and she went off and communicated the bad news to the rest of the gang...
I keep telling myself that it was only an hour and a half lost............lol
