If it were a white artist with a culturally uncouth black driver?

And the white man teaches him how to eat, not throw trash from the car, not steal, not swear, then how to talk, how to write letters and how to be a “gentleman”, would it be the most racist and culturally insensitive movie of the year or nominated for best picture?

reply

There are already plenty of "white savior" movies.

I think people are a little over it.

Like?

It’s your topic. Do I have to do your research for you?

reply

Back up your assertion.

reply

You first.

reply

You made the comment, don't deflect and don't use a ridiculous source Ike Wikipedia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_savior_narrative_in_film#List_of_associated_films

reply

Wikipedia is too difficult for this guy.

reply

I was very skeptical about that list. When I saw that Greenbook was part of it, I knew how wrong it was. People have to stop analysing movies based on races.

reply

I just looked at it too. I laughed because Avatar was in it. I guess any movie with ANY type of resolution with a white lead would be considered a "white savior" movie, if Avatar fits the requirement.

reply

That list is laughable bullshit. "Glory Road"? A TRUE story about a white man coaching an all black team to a college national championship? Ask the Texas Western College (now UTEP) players if they felt Coach Haskins was a "white savior."

"Lincoln"? "LINCOLN"? Good God.

"The Matrix"? Hahahahahahaha.

"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"? Huh?

And, the most ridiculous two:

"The Greatest Showman"

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"

Only a moron could read this list without laughing repeatedly.

White guy sees black guy(s) in need of help, helps him . What's the problem?

reply

No, of course not. Oscars have a political agenda and everybody knows that. Anything else is bothering you?

Exactly!!!!! You nailed it. Even though it's a true story it just shows the paradox of reverse racism. The fact that such a film surely couldn't happen just shows how deeply and profoundly racist this "left" way of thinking really is.

reply

I wonder if Italians were offended?

reply

Probably not. There's only one group that gets offended at everything and it isn't Italians.

reply

Yeah I watched a story on how slavery is taught in highschools and they took offence at a painting of slaves in a text book because they didn't look oppressed, chained, beaten, etc. I'm sure some slaves were well looked after. In fact, when most slaves were freed, they stayed put because where else would they go?

reply

I once read an eyewitness account about Thomas Jefferson. He had been away from Monticello for an extended trip. When he finally arrived home, a group of slaves gathered to welcome him, lifted him up and carried him to his house sitting on their shoulders. They loved him, and were overjoyed that he was home. Slavery, of course, was one of the great mistakes of all time; however, it couldn't have sustained itself for so long if it had been all whippings and misery.

Then it would not be called the Green Book. The white man is not just learning how to be a gentleman. He is learning what Dr Shirley had to learn in order how to survive. Tony gets away w throwing trash, being illiterate bc he is a heteronomative white man. He does not have to worry what people actually think of him for who he is. It makes a gradual impression on him.

reply

Tony had to worry about it multiple times in the movie. He was arrested the same as Don and repeatedly threatened including the knife and shotgun scene. He was also the recurring target of racist commentary and prejudice by other characters. The switch of the stereotypical “black man” and “white man” was the key and manifest irony of the whole movie.

reply

Not everybody had RFK's direct line to get them released from a jail cell though. So again. Shirley has privilege and connections. Tony was arrested but I think the only attorney he was aware of was the attorney who had worked with the club he used to bounce at prior to this job.

reply

It might have been a better movie if the roles were reversed. Especially if it took place in the 80s or 90s and the black guy was a gangster/rapper type and the white guy had to teach him how to act sophisticated and culturally aware. Sure, people would call it racist but it would make for some pretty hilarious scenes.

reply

This actually sounds like the plot of Trading Places which is one of my favorite comedies.
