my god, I am really struggling to keep watching at this point

What is it even supposed to be about anymore?? And Ruby is walking around town covered in gore - right!

Five more episodes of this? I don't know if I can take it. More importantly, I don't foresee a payoff to all this. Thinking if I should just cut my losses now...

Is the show about cosmic monsters yet or is it still about the white boogey man.

reply

It's neither.

But then it's hard to tell what it is actually about. Some black folks researching their family history, I suppose.

I just can't get past the feeling that this is an anthology rather than one continuous story, and I can't enjoy it because of that. Especially when every story within it is just weird rather than interesting or thought-provoking.

Its not even about lovecraft. Its about another novel written by Matt Ruff about a lovecraft fan that gets sucked into a racists american road trip looking for his father. Its basically a bait and switch. As for the racial commentary No one behaves like this any more. Its like watching a movie about cave men clubbing women on the head and dragging them off into a cave for intimate relationships. No one believes or behaves that way and the behavior is recognized as deplorable by every one. No one alive today has experienced that kind of sexism/racism so why keep beating americans over the head with it.

And what pains me is that this was one of the most eagerly awaited series for me ever! I've been brimming with anticipation ever since I first heard it announced last year.

"No one believes or behaves that way and the behavior is recognized as deplorable by every one. No one alive today has experienced that kind of sexism/racism so why keep beating americans over the head with it."

Do you own a TV? Have easy access to the interwebs? Ever get out of your house?

If the answer to Any of these is "yes," then the only explanation for such ridiculous statements is willful stupidity.

reply

Practice skepticism.

One of my FAVORITE pieces of bathroom graffiti, scrawled on the wall of a stall (!!!) my freshman year as an undergrad:

First scribble: "Question EVERYTHING!"
Scribbled directly underneath it: "Why???"

(That said, I stand by my previous post 😎)

reply

I once drew a badge around the words "Question Authority" on a stall wall.

You really think people are chasing black people in droves with guns in wild car chases? If the answer to this is yes then get your head out of your ass.

I think what you're struggling to express is do I think it happens *frequently*. Like most easily confused people, you haven't carefully thought this through:

Of COURSE it happens. As I said above, there's no question of this, in an era where EVERYONE carries a smartphone. Have you been asleep the past couple years?
Does it happen "often"? That's a more difficult question. You'd have to first define "often." An easier question: does it happen too much? Well, ANY amount is too much, to a thinking person.

Here's the part that really relates to this show: Does it happen like in this series? Well, this is the crux of your confusion: A) The show is NOT SET IN CURRENT TIMES, and B) Does NOT show a series of events that's unusual for the time period. Period.

Did these types of things happen? Of Course they did. Did they happen all the time? No, not All The Time. Do they happen all the time on the show? No, they don't.

I urge you to take your own advice, and at least make an attempt at critical thinking.

reply

this is an inverse sorites paradox where you claim a few grains of sand makes a pile. At least your admitting it doesn't happen frequently which is my point.

reply

Mmm. . .no, sorry: incorrectly applying a concept from Rhetorical Fallacies 101 does not deflect from the fact that you've been proven to have spouted nonsense.

Would say nice try, but it's not. "Pathetic" would be more accurate. To repeat: your statement "No one alive today has experienced that kind of sexism/racism" is patently absurd, demonstrably untrue, and mind-numbingly stupid.

Impossible to backpedal now and claim you meant "it doesn't happen frequently." Try harder next time. Or don't be a muppet in the first place? Shrug.

reply

Now your just trolling. You've proven nothing. I just don't subscribe to your fantasy that the US is a biggoted wasteland this television show is depicting. I'm sorry if that hurts your agenda but facts don't care about your illusions.

reply

Are you gazing into a mirror as you type? Sticking your fingers in your ears and claiming nothing has happened Doesn't Make It So. The proof is all around you; you have to be a special kind of stupid to deny it.

And again, your confusion is showing: you continue to say this show is depicting the US as a "biggoted" wasteland. It's doing nothing of the sort: It's based in the PAST. If you can't grasp that simple concept, you're beyond help.

You're embarrassing yourself. You started with "it never happens," moved to "it doesn't happen frequently," and now bloviate about trolling and your personal disbelief. As if that means anything in the face of the cascade of physical/VIDEO evidence that's rocked the US this past year. I'll repeat: You're a special kind of stupid.

reply

agreed, now it is pointless AND disgusting

I think I'll just wait until the end of the season and see what people say then. Ep 4 was a chore for me to get through, but ep 5 was just torturous. I don't think I can bring myself to go through that again unless I know for sure that the season (and story) improves.

i had to look away anytime i heard squishy blood noises

reply

After episode 4 I gave up. Sorry folks. Too much Freemason shit for me. Wanted to like it and the actors are great but overall not interesting enough.

reply

Freemasonry was popular back then. Does this focus on the conspiracy theories?

reply

It has a bit of everything including Freemason and lodge mentions. Definitely conspiracies and monster of the week. Set during Jim Crow times and the struggle for equality.

reply

I walked away after episode 3. I came here to see if I should jump back in, and based on most opinions, I'm glad I walked away.

it sucks
