Movie doesn’t works because Abbey Lee can’t act

This type of movie needs a competent leading actress which Abbey Lee is not. She was monotone and struggled to show nuance and emotion.

I made an account just to agree with you ElSofoque (1842). Having seen "Lovecraft Country," Abbey Lee Kershaw's minute movements reminded me of a valley girl. When she turned up on a horse in episode 2, I bursted out laughing -- the scene was certainly not set up for a laugh. However, this may not be her fault since the director has final say on how the scene goes. Still, one wonders if she could have carried herself into a more serious recognition. Abbey Lee Kershaw was intended to play a mysterious and extremely powerful woman with knowledge known only to few. The set up of the show was all for that. Unfortunately, she moved with childish languidness. This quality was especially apparent whenever her character met disappointment; in the scene where Atticus met her father for the first time, the character presented was bratty rather than defiant. Kershaw moved too much in a way a highschool amateur actor might in a hurried Shakespeare production. To her credit, she does the flat American accent well. I must note that before watching "Lovecraft Country," I didn't know who Abbey Lee Kershaw was -- I didn't know that she is an Australian supermodel and couldn't have developed any kind of prejudice I might tag to a "high fashion" insider. Somehow her posture is limp but her gestures jerky. I hope her acting gains the needed grace.

Totally agreed also in terms of looks Carla Gugino completely blew her out of the water with that scene were she was laying on the bed naked.

It's unfortunate to think that a better actress might have lost a role just because someone had a supermodel tag.

Same thing happened with her getting cast in Fury Road, so many better actresses to choose from.

I disagree, I think she did well for the part and didn't find her lacking at all. I thought she was also good in "Neon Demon".

reply

Yeah, I didn't have any issue with her either.
