Roseanne Conner advocating spanking makes no sense
I know that there's a belief among many conservatives (who Roseanne's trying to portray and appeal to) that the reason "kids these days" are so out of control is because they weren't spanked as a kid, but hearing Roseanne Conner imply the same thing in tonight's episode made no sense, if we take the history of her character into account at all. They did a whole episode about it in the original series - the one where Roseanne lost control, spanked DJ for stealing the family car, felt horrible about it, faced her own trauma from when her and Jackie's father used to hit them and promised DJ she'd never hit him again, no matter what he did. So, now, we're supposed to believe that that same character would not only advocate spanking but also call her granddaughter a bitch and jerk her by the neck and shove her head in the sink? Come on. The whole thing just felt like Roseanne pandering to conservatives instead of protecting the consistency and legacy of the Roseanne Conner character.
Now, I'm not saying spanking is good or bad (or is a liberal vs conservative thing), I'm just saying that Roseanne Conner advocating it - whether she's supposed to be a conservative now or not - makes no sense.
