You can probably understand it without watching Split, but you won't have any emotional investment in McAvoy's character if you don't watch his movie first. And he really is the standout in both films.

I did watch "Split" when it first came out, but stopped watching it 3/4 of the way in. It was boring and difficult to follow. The movie wasn't faced-paced and thrilling enough for me. Maybe I will give it a chance sometime down the road, but definitely before I tackle "Glass" - as per your recommendation.

Actually, I've seen all 3, but when I watched Glass last night for the first time, I found myself saying "boy, this would be confusing as hell to anybody coming in cold".

In other words, it's not just the emotional investment, it's the details -- it was not written to stand-alone.

You might follow the story with no issue even if you don’t, but I mean it’s a direct sequel and it sets up this final installment in the series. Though Glass wasn’t a satisfying ending to this series, I’d say it’s more impactful having seen Split. (And just in case, don’t forget about Unbreakable.)

Split is great btw. Easily one of M. Night’s best.

I stopped watching Split somewhere near the beginning. I just lost Interest.
I saw Unbreakable when it came out and enjoyed it.

I had no problem watching Glass. The missing pieces were easy to pick up on.
I enjoyed the movie.

It is strongly recommended you watch the trilogy in order if you want the full story:

Unbreakable
Split
Glass

Unfortunately, imo, the second two movies are of such a lower quality, I would be perfectly happy just watching Unbreakable three times in a row.

You got it. Weirdly Shyamalan seemed determined to make origin stories rather than actually doing something fun with his brand new superhero. The films are three origin stories... It is a damn shame that the best superhero film ever made was made by a guy who appears to dislike superheros.

It's amazing how much I love his first three films, with Unbreakable as maybe a top five to ten superhero film, and then the rest all sunk to mediocre to trash.

Dammit, it reminds me of another filmmaker that followed an identical pattern, but the name isn't coming to mind atm...
