The period drama screened on Friday night at the 74th annual Cannes, where it was showered with a robust five-minute standing ovation.

The foreign-language movie — loosely adapted from the book “Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy” — stars Belgian actress Virginie Efira as Benedetta Carlini, an 1800s French nun who believes she is possessed by Jesus Christ.

As she grapples with that revelation, she falls in love with her caretaker, a young nun named Bartolomea (Daphne Patakia). Their explicit love affair unravels with racy love scenes reminiscent of “Blue Is the Warmest Colour” and a sex toy that’s carved out of a wooden figure of the Virgin Mary.

There’s also enough violence in “Benedetta” to give “The Passion of the Christ” a run for its money, although it’s unlikely that this movie will play to the same religious crowds that bought tickets to that 2004 blockbuster.

So? Sexuality is a big part of life.

reply

You must know lots of nuns!

reply

You're mistaken to think that nuns do not experience sexuality.

With Virgin Mary dildos?

With anything. We're talking about humans here.

Catholic protesters descended on Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center for the New York Film Festival premiere of Paul Verhoeven’s scandalous lesbian nun drama “Benedetta.” The movie, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to shock and acclaim, stars Virginie Efira as Benedetta Carlini, a novice nun in the 17th century who joins an Italian convent and has a lesbian love affair with another nun.

“They are upset about its ‘blasphemous’ portrayal of nuns and Catholicism. They’re repeatedly saying Hail Marys into megaphones,” said IndieWire’s Managing Editor Christian Blauvelt. Protesters, some of whom were seen playing drums and bagpipes, appear to be part of a group called America Needs Fatima.

reply

America doesn't need Fatima it needs Thinima !

reply

Thinima?

If he wanted an accurate depiction of lesbian nuns, they'd look like Nancy pelosi and Elizabeth Warren.

Vatican 2 was used to make that a reality
