Why is this considered a spin-off yet...

... Toyko Drift is included in the numbered series (although not titled as such)?

Surely Toyko Drift is just as much, if not more, of a spin-off - it's only connection is Dom for about 5 seconds at the end and a retconning of Han into the series.

Hobbs & Shaw are both characters with way more screen time in previous numbered F&F films and therefore this film is much less of a spin-off.

Really though they should just drop the numbers altogether and just crack on with the series. It's not like the James Bond producers felt the need to keep numbering their films.

Tokyo Drift was released as proper Fast 3 movie, a series already considered to die or go DTV after that. That's why it is a main series title. Hobbs & Shaw was released at a time the franchise was on a alltime high thanks to the unfortunate death of Paul Walker. But yes, considering as what all was released in the franchise, Fast 3 (and also Fast 2) feels more like Spin-Offs as main series titles. The series only feel right with Vin Diesel in it.

Toyko Drift's full title was "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift". Hobbs & Shaw's "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw". Pretty similar.

I guess at the point 2 Fast 2 Furious was released maybe they had plans to take it forward with Paul Walker only, so that one kind of works for me. It's like he had his run in with Dom in part 1, now this is where he is with part 2. Maybe if it had made enough $, we'd have seen Brian go to Toyko for part 3 and maybe it would have finished there and then.

Seriously, when watching Tokyo Drift (my fav of the "classics", as its not trying to tell an unrealistic story) I thought thats it, case closed. Was seriously surprised when they reactivated the series for Fast & Furious (aka Fast 4). Btw as you see this is clearly as Soft-reboot. The series only got with Fast 5 proper numbering.

Funnily enough, I was reading last night that this numbering thing isn't even an issue in Toyko itself.

The Japanese have a completely different name for Fast and Furious:-

So, the "spin-off" issue doesn't even exist - they're all just Wild Speeds!

Toyko Drift = Wild Speed X3
Hobbs & Shaw = Wild Speed: Super Combo

but it does have Dom in ff2, so its truer as a sequel.
