I spent half the movie thinking he had Down's syndrome or was a giant midget until I realized he's just a Fatboy. That is one bad haircut for him. His acting was godawful with him bumping into everything and falling around. He looks like Wee Man from Jackass

I'm convinced the reason the movie was hated so much as because this kid (and grown up JD whose acting was somehow even worse) was so unpleasant to watch. Of course if it had been the same story but about black people, it would have won multiple Oscars, gotten 100% RT score, etc.

Yeah, the young JD Vance (played by Owen Asztalos) was not very appealing to the eyes, but I don't know, maybe Vance looked like this when he was young?? Glen Close's character was quite difficult to look at too. They also tried to dirty up Amy Adams but that's impossible. lol she's still hot in this film...

That being said, I wouldn't say it's a bad film though, but nothing to write home about. It's probably a much better book than movie. I haven't read the book yet but I watched this movie today and it's alright. I'll give it a 5.8 out of 10. Decent film, it had some pretty good lines in it but all the flashbacks and flash-forwards just didn't quite work in this one.

Too bad really because I like Ron Howard's movies.
