well, look on the bright side...
Even if it turns out to be inferior to Robert Wise's great '63 film version, there's no way in hell it will be WORSE than the puke-inducing, SFX diarrhea travesty that was the Spielberg-produced remake.

shareUm, I take that back--this might suck just as hard as the '99 film. I just found out that this is an Amblin Production, so Spielberg's influence is still prevalent on this. Also, from looking at the cast list, this doesn't seem to be Jackson's story from the novel at all--it looks like some kind "present day" story with a family living in the house. Oh brother...

π The remake was god-awful, wasn't it? Even with a great cast.
I'm only about 10 minutes into the first episode. So far, you're right, it's about a family living in a (the?) house, present day. I'll reserve judgement until I've at least finished the first episode. It does start out with "whatever walks here, walks alone." So far that's all I've detected of it being based on Jackson's story.
So far, it doesn't suck as much as the '99 movie, but boy is it only very loosely based on Jackson's novel, which is disappointing.
Mainly it's the characters' names, with the addition of one named Shirley! There's a Nell, and her father is/was Hugh Crane. A Theo, a Luke. This Hugh Crane had a son he named Steven, Nell's brother, who has something to do with being a skeptic who investigates and writes about paranormal events.
There was the brief appearance of a spiral staircase.
Otherwise, so far, nothing to do with the novel. It's not bad, but not great either, and if you're looking for it to be much at all to do with The Haunting of Hill House, don't bother.
Thanks for the preview of what to expect--it's sounds like it's definitely not worth going out of my way to see, let alone wanting to spring on paying for a subscription to streaming. It really seems like Netflix, Amazon, and all the other other streaming platforms are so desperate for content they're pretty much opening up the checkbook for any and every pitch that comes their way right now.
And, at least in my humble opinon, nothing remotely related to Shirley Jackson's The Haunting will ever top Robert Wise's adaptation of that novel.
I wouldn't pay for a subscription to watch it. Might be worth your while if you can get a free trial. There's some decent acting in it, but I kept falling asleep through various episodes, so I still can't give it a fair review.
But I can say it doesn't have much to do with the original story.
I'm 100% with you on Robert Wise's adaptation. It was brilliant, and holds up to the test of time.
I kept falling asleep through various episodes
It's a perfectly normal reaction when encountering bland, mediocre television shows.

Then you agree The poster had a "Not Normal Reaction" then?
I mean You just set The standard, according to you Its a perfectly normal reaction to fall asleep when encountering bland, mediocre television shows......
so there for when you have A Great TV show Like Hill House, It was NOT NORMAL for the poster to fall asleep while watching it....
Personally I think Its kinda odd to fall asleep during any show no matter if its good or bad(Unless of course Its at night before you go to bed) But if Your just starting a series with the intentions of watching it, Its Odd to fall asleep, I would either keep watching it tell I was hooked, Or stop watching once I knew I wasnt going to like it....To Keep watching A TV series that you care so little about that your falling asleep through every episode, Is NOT NORMAL.....
but thats my take.....Your take is different, You think Its Normal to fall asleep if The TV show is bad....
which again means you actually agree with the poster that Its NOT A NORMAL reaction because HILL HOUSE doesnt fit your criteria, Hill House is NOT a bland,Mediocre TV show, Therefor it was in fact even by your standards NOT NORMAL for the poster to fall asleep during a Good TV show like Hill house
Anything you say, Lloyd... Anything you say.

lol didnt like getting beat by your OWN WORDS huh?
Why is this a matter of anyone "getting beat" by anything to you? π
Just as with any movie or TV show, there are going to be people who love it, hate it, are indifferent to it, and everything in between.
It's silly to get so hot under the collar about something as unimportant as a TV show or movie.
Why is this a matter of anyone "getting beat" by anything to you? π

lol Its not like im sitting angry and pacing at the thought someone didnt like the show...Just having fun here....
I did really like the show...But Its perfectly fine if you or anyone else didnt, I just found his reply ALMOST BEGGING for a comeback so I did it....

You and Nicko are hilarious!
I don't think Hill House is a great show. You do, and possibly Nicko does too, and that's fine.
My falling asleep during it isn't necessarily because I thought it's a bad show. I specifically said I saw some good acting in it, and that my overall jury was still out because I couldn't give it a fair evaluation, since I missed a lot of it. All I could comment on was what I did see.
I often put on a show after I get into bed. I have tinnitus, so having a show, or movie, or music on after I get into bed is par for the course.
Judging by what I saw, it wasn't all that great, not nearly riveting enough for me to get hooked and stay awake.
You love it, so you don't like anyone saying anything that might be considered negative about it, even though I really didn't say anything negative about it, so you, and Nicko, are responding accordingly.
I haven't watched either of those and went into it without knowing anything at all about it and I really loved it. It stands great on it's own merits.
