Cautionary tale of the abuse of power.

Entertaining and cautionary. I loved it. It shows the chaotic conditions in Germany at the end of the second World War, revealing that in such a degenerative regime, anybody can pick up a mantle and run with it.

Max Hubacher plays private Willi Herold, who finds a Nazi Captain's uniform, puts it on and causes carnage as he the power goes to his head. It's shot brilliantly and doesn't have a bad performance throughout. Some of the action is a little shocking, par for the course for such a movie, and the end credits are deliberately off kilter with the rest of the movie.

Yes the trailer looks good, cinematography looks great. And subtitles are alright. Most of the time these days you have to put them on because dialogue in many modern films can often be almost indecipherable.

I've noticed that too. In fact, it's been like this since we made the jump from Analog to Digital. It seems like the audio is just not as good. I literally can't hear the actors and as a result I have to turn on the subtitles most of the time.

Yeah, just watched it, powerful film. It reminds me of the movie Downfall (2004) quite a bit, which is another film based on the last days of WWII from the German perspective. And just like in that film, The Captain has another great performance from the lead character played by Max Hubacher.

***minor spoiler** The look on his face when prisoners are getting executed for the same crimes he himself had committed just days before is quite engrossing. You could see the anguish he's feeling but at the same time he knows his sinister plan is working out perfectly for him.

Damn good film in my opinion.

Although, like you said, the subject matter is hard to watch due to the graphic nature of war. There's plenty of senseless violence going on here. But if you can handle it you're surely going to like it. Of course, the violence is understandable. At this point of the war, Germany was feeling very desperate and was willing to pull all the strings to come away with a miracle victory at that last moment when it all seemed like a helpless situation.

The only question left to ask is... is it as good as Downfall? That's hard to say, I think Downfall is slightly better because the main character is playing Hitler himself rather than an unknown private in the German military. Both films are based on true stories and they both portray that era/moment rather well. And both are in German with English subtitles. However, The Captain is in black and white while DF is in color which might turn some off but I thought it was a perfect fit for this movie.

I give it an 8 out of 10.

That's the exact reason why I prefer The Captain. I can identify much more with an anonymous private than a dictator. This film is much more involving for that reason. I agree that color would not have been as effective.

It's just hard to go with TC over DF because of the outstanding performance by Bruno Ganz but I have no problems with someone preferring this film.
