Why are some things and people going in reverse?

In the trailer boats, cars and even people are going in reverse while other things are going forwards. What's up with that?

The movie is about time. My theory, based on the trailer, is the characters can see what will happen in certain locations. The people moving backwards is most likely a device to show a scene being reversed as if the character is putting together what happened.
