Has grossed $75 million on digital VOD thus far.

One shining example is “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the year’s highest-grossing film to date. The movie was released theatrically on April 5th and then arrived on PVOD 41 days later on May 16th. In the past three weeks it has generated a further $30 million at the domestic box office and, according to the paper, more than $75 million in PVOD revenue. The Times also says films like “Jurassic World: Dominion,” “The Croods: A New Age” and “Sing 2” have each collected more than $50 million from PVOD.

Thought I'd share this as you often don't hear how much money films make through digital sales. This is a big release, likely will be the highest grossing theatrical release of the year and as such this figure here would be a 'top end' figure, this isn't the norm but you can see that they've made plenty of money in just three weeks.

According to the outlet, Universal has made more than $1 billion in less than three years from PVOD revenue and, more importantly, has done so with little-to-no decrease in box-office sales or regular VOD revenue.

Some more. Seems Universal are very pleased with their release strategy thus far.

“It has had a hugely positive impact on our business,” Ms. Langley said, adding that without it, Universal would have likely had to make fewer movies. Universal and Focus will release 26 movies in theaters this year, more than any other Hollywood studio.

Universal charges as much as $25 to rent a film for 48 hours and $30 to buy it during its premium V.O.D. sales period. Those prices can drop to $6 and $20 in the later, traditional sales window.

About 80 percent of premium V.O.D. revenue goes to Universal, with sales platforms like iTunes and Google Play keeping most of the rest. (A small cut goes to theater chains like AMC Entertainment — grease to get them to agree to reduced exclusivity.) Ticket sales are typically split 50-50 with theaters.

Premium V.O.D. revenue is small compared with box-office sales. But it’s certainly not nothing.

I'm very glad to hear that films are doing so well on digital. Studios getting a bigger slice of the pie.

I wish more data on home media and digital performance was forthcoming. A shame that whole side of the business is shrouded in mystery.

Who pays $25 to RENT a movie?! And $30 to buy it without any extras usually featured on dvds. People have money to spare.

OMG I came here just to say the same thing and actually had to check your username to see if I hadn't been the one who wrote this! It's not hard to gross $75 million when they charge $30 to RENT the goddamn thing (it was a $30 rental when I looked upon its initial release). And they wonder why we torrent. For $30 I can buy a video game that'll give me way more than 90 minutes worth of entertainment. This movie wasn't even good.

I think this movie outperformed most of Marvel movies, second only to avatar 2, I don't understand why, at all.

Is Nostalgia that powerful?

reply

YES.

ALSO...THE MOVIE IS EXCELLENT.

You and I clearly have a very different opinion of this movie: https://moviechat.org/tt6718170/The-Super-Mario-Bros-Movie/64638bcdb05f883b55b0b2ee/Kind-of-stupid-and-pointless

YOU AND THE MAJORITY...IT'S LOVED BY KIDS AND PARENTS ALIKE AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE.

reply

Most of the time I am in minority with my opinions, and I take pride in that.

But anyway, any opinion about my comments of the movie?

reply

SOUNDS LIKE YOU DIDN'T PLAY MANY MARIO GAMES.

reply

No, I didn't.

That is why I was surprised about the power of Nostalgia. I don't think it can be the merits of the movie itself.

As sad as your average movieslop-eater is, they are nothing compared to the drones that live in the gaming community. They literally pay 70 dollars for games excluding the online and any extra fees.

reply

As good an explanation as any.

YEAH...NOBODY REALLY LIKES ANYTHING...EVERYBODY JUST MINDLESSLY CONSUMES.🙄

I laugh out loud whenever I see a video game retailing for $70--especially when it's a digital download that I can't resell, has no middleman and no physical media costs associated with it. Given those factors, digital games should sell at a huge discount. But nope! Apparently idiots pay it. And then they turn around and say they NEED a $20/hr minimum wage to survive. Bitch please.
