Tarantino Lite

A host of well imagined, edgy characters like a Tarantino film but the story did not gel in any admirable way. Too bad. This had promise. 5/10

I also felt like it was a lighter Tarantino-ish film but I really liked it. I'm always a hesitant with films that approach the 2 and a half hour mark but I didn't find this one dragging at all. 8/10 for me.

The undercover G Man
The thief pretending to be a priest
The lounge singer bedeviled by racism
The unhinged cult girl
Her rescuing sister
The cult leader
The penitent ex-military bellhop

This list of characters is great. A glance at this makes one think that the movie could write itself. Sadly it felt as though that is exactly what happened. So many threads meant nothing and in the end the "solution" came from the same nowhere that so much else disappeared into.

I find my expectations can really affect the way I enjoy a film sometimes. For example this one I had almost no expectations and I just found myself having a blast with it. If I had been super excited for this perhaps I would've been let down. In any case I've been recommending this one to friends so if they take my advice maybe they'll come back cursing me for sending them to this.

Lol, I know what you mean. I went to Venom expecting it to be as stupid as the trailers made it seem. And sure, it was stupid but I enjoyed myself. I went to El Royale expecting it to be fantastic. Other than the characters and a few situations (that went nowhere) I felt majorly let down.

reply

I concur. There b potential but dis wuz no Tarantino. Da dialogue wuz horrid.

reply

Da potential B realized, da dialogue wuz tite...I think we're spoilt by Tarantino. No, it wuznt any Tarantino, but it wuz gude 4 not beeng a Tarantino.

reply

Venom was awful though.

reply

Yes. That's the point I was making. Often we can enjoy an awful movie ... like El Royal, for instance.

reply

I just can't get over how bad Venom was. It really took me by surprise.

reply

You expected something good? Even after seeing the trailers?

reply

As a rule, I don't watch trailers. They give away too much.

reply

Too true. For years I would avoid ALL trailers of any movie I knew i was going to see no matter what. Not so much nowadays since there is a much lower bar of quality in film overall.

reply

Sometimes if I'm really on the fence about watching something I'll start the trailer and watch up to 30 seconds to see if it can pull me in.

reply

That can happen. I heard horrible things about Venom, but I enjoyed it. I heard Endgame was the best movie ever, and I thought it was just okay.

reply

I, too, was not overly impressed with Endgame. Infinity War was great. Endgame was just OK.

reply

Me too. I had no idea what to expect and loved it! I thought it was a great film.

reply

Hilarious, I used Tarantino Lite to describe it in a FB group too. Considering we both felt that way, I'll guess there's something to it. I actually said Tarantino Lite that didn't work, lol.

reply

>>secret handshake<<

Heh, cool. It sums it up pretty well, right? I agree that it didn't work. I give as high as a 5/10 because there were moments that I liked. Sadly, those moments were few and didn't serve to create a well crafted film.

Imagine if Tarantino actually HAD done this. Could have been a good movie (lots would have to change though)

reply

His worst movie is better than this, and I couldn't exactly say what his worst movie was.

reply

Spot on. It’s a pretty neat concept on paper but ultimately it fell flat and was waaaaaaaay too long. I had to fast forward the stupid singing lady parts. She was very boring. 4/10.

reply

I found it to be one of the better movies to come out in recent years.

reply

thinking the same thing.....except somehow QT keeps you hooked
