Didn't they kill him off in one of the previous movies?

But he was alive for the Phoenix Saga in the comic books and played a major part, being Jean Greys love interest.

Yes he is. How? Days of Future Past & Apocalypse have the answers you’re looking for. (Note: the latter is set decades earlier.)

Btw, the timeline in this series has been screwy.

You're thinking of the old continuity from the first three X-Men movies back in the 2000s.
