S1 E1 SPOILER talk

Ok so I just watched the very first episode. I was surprised. It ain't bad. Happy to see Frasier being convincingly sinister and always love Hurt. The high production value was evident and I liked the directing too. All in all I was happy ... until the very end.

Showing that assassin girl peering at him from the next train car was a huge misstep and kind of stupid. One, it is ridiculous to assume that she changed clothes and kept up with his mad dash through DC including two train changes. Two, it is a directing equivalent of shitting the bed. It was perfect with him finally sitting down, thinking he is perhaps safe. Then the gravity of his situation has time to weigh on him AND us as he nervously looks around the train car. NOT seeing anyone specific plays to the fear of what is closing in on him far better than a supernatural predator actually being there like some 80s B movie ghost.

So here is my question for those whom have watched further: Does the show continue to lose its finesse like this or does it maintain the quality that seemed present in most of this first episode?

OK, they immediately show how she was where she was. That is forgiven. I still don't like the assassin girl at all and that directing bit was still sub-optimal but I am OK with E1 ending now.

I'm up to episode 5 now and am still happy with the production value. The show is well acted and generally well directed. It is the writing that is showing some weakness. I know the original movie was certainly left leaning and I know it is a big-bad-wolf govt premise. I walked in expecting extrapolation of just that. However, it is a little weak with its "Left good, Right bad" writing. The posturing is forced and shallow. Still good enough to see it through. I am curious how they will make a 2nd season.

How refreshing would it be for a show to have an evil Democrat behind it all? The lack of that doesn't say anything about writer integrity or fairness does it?
