huge mistake: did my eyes deceive me? (spoilers)

when mel and vince begin following the van after the robbery, mel says we're gonna need gas soon. this would've been approx 10 am by my calculations. (the bank had just opened)

then they follow the van onto the interstate for a long ways, during which outside the car everything turns to night, and they reach the final location where the showdown occurs.

but they never stopped for gas. this would have been a minimum 8 hour drive (in winter when it's dark by 6pm) but possibly longer.

this whole contradiction hinges on mel saying 'we're gonna need gas soon'

i don't get why the filmmakers wouldn't have caught this

reply

They stopped for gas when the cameras were switched off.

reply

you are right, logically. but following chekhov's rule they shouldn't have mentioned it in the dialogue

reply

I think if anything they mentioned it to answer the question in your OP, because if they never mentioned gas and didn't show them at a gas station, you would probably be asking how they made it without stopping at a gas station.

reply

They had a gas can. Mel's character even mentioned them stopping to use it when the bank robbers stopped for gas.

reply

oh. really? I missed that.
