Convince me to see this...
I see that it's available on Prime.
I don't have any desire to see it as a Terminator movie, but maybe I could get past the way it gutted the mythology and just enjoy as an action flick?

If you consider yourself a "woke" person then you'll probably like it, as the woke ideology permeates every frame of the film. On the other hand, if you despise that shit then you will despise the film.
As a Terminator movie, it fails. As an action movie, the best I can say for it is that it has some good scenes. It's maybe a 6/10 if you're just looking at it as an action film.
It's probably worth seeing either way just to say you did and to be able to talk about it, but it's not very good and it's way too political.
So I watched it. Meh.
It contributes as much to the Terminator mythology as Fury Road did to the Mad Max series. Which is to say, not at all.
As an action movie it really just followed the chase/fight/"we gotta keep moving" rinse-and-repeat formula of the first two movies. Competent, but otherwise unremarkable.
Yeah, in terms of the formula, it's very much just a rehash of previous films.
There are some decent action scenes, but even there once it hits the big CGI-overload finale on the dam it just gets boring and comes off as uninspired.
I wouldn't agree it contributes nothing to the mythology though. I'd say it contributes negatively. By killing off John Conor they take the story in a distinctly different direction, but it's a terrible direction that gives the middle finger to T1 and T2.
"I wouldn't agree it contributes nothing to the mythology though. I'd say it contributes negatively."
We agree on this. I meant that instead of the Connor mythology of the first two movies continuing to evolve and expand, they effectively bring it to a dead stop. Only to take two steps back and replace it with something nearly identical and less interesting.
T3 and Salvation at least moved the story onward and upward. DF is just a T/T2 re-mix.
YES...MORE JOHN CONNOR NONSENSE IS WHAT THE FILM NEEDED...BECAUSE HE WASNT ALREADY THE CRAPPIEST CENTRAL FIGURE TO A FRANCHISE EVER...HE EVEN BECAME A TERMINATOR?...KILLING JOHN WAS STEP ONE TO MAKING THIS MOVIE GOOD...THEY MISSED A FEW LATER STEPS BUT OVERALL ITS A GOOD FLICK WITH FUN ACTION AND SOME HEART...EXACTLY WHAT I EXPECT TO SEE WHEN I WATCH A TERMINATOR FLICK...NOT NICK STAHL TALKING TO THE HAND AND CHRISTIAN BALE WHISPERING IN THE EAR OF A GUY WHO DOESNT KNOW HES A TERMINATOR...
shareYeah. Salvation is underrated, I think. It's nowhere near the level of the first two films, but on its own it's not a bad action sci-fi movie. There's actually a lot of rad practical effects work in that movie that never gets any credit.
T3 is at least watchable and has some good scenes.
I'm 99% certain I will never watch Genisys or Dark Fate again for any reason.
GENISYS SUCKS..FAIR ENOUGH...DARK FATE IS EASILY THE THIRD BEST TERMINATOR FLICK THOUGH...EXCEPT FOR THOSE ICKY GIRLS I GUESS...๐...COOTIES AND PERIODS AND ALL...IT CAN BE SCARY FOR SOME "GUYS".๐
shareVery specifically, which parts for you were woke?
I hate all this woke bullshit, but I didn't really see any of it in the film, unless you think majority female cast = wokeness.
Did you also think Birds of Prey was woke? I also liked this and thought it was a good little action film - again, majority female cast, but not much wokery going on.
I wonder if you'd say the same, if something like The Descent was released in 2020?
The wokery primarily came through replacing male characters with female ones and with the elevation of Latin characters and culture over their white counterparts.
Fuck off, John Connor. Even though you've been mankind's last best hope for decades, you need to literally get blown away so that this little Mexican girl can take your place as the TRUE savior of humanity.
And while we're at it, we need to replace Arnold with an androgynous-looking female terminator, and let's have them all battle against the evil male Rev-9.
But to me, perhaps the most egregious shit was the obvious political commentary about Latinos and borders. In the Age of Trump, do you think it's a coincidence that a large part of the story has to do with a Mexican girl who, in order to complete her hero's journey, has to illegally cross the border, and battle a Terminator who takes the form of a Border Patrol agent, and then fight her way out of an ICE detention facility?
Dark Fate is basically a woke sermon being preached under the guise of a Terminator film. It's the hijacking of an action movie franchise for political purposes.

Ha! That didn't occur to me as I watched it, but now that you point it out I think you're right. Not being American, the nuance was probably below my radar.
Nice catch...
Cameron's always put his politics into his movies, but this shit was just over-the-top.
It's unfortunate that the final leg of his career sucks. His run from The Terminator to Titanic was pretty epic. He made a lot of good movies during that span. Since Titanic though he's been pretty useless.
I did like Alita, so at least he was involved with one good film, if only as a producer.
A large cargo plane crashes near the US/Mexico border. You would think the authorities might do something about it but once the scene's over, the movie just moves on and forgets it.

Wait until you can see it for free. If it is free on Prime, watch it for a while and see if you like it. I thought it was stupid and not worth watching, but you or someone else might like it.
