The thing is that nobody gave a shit back then. Indeed, the show was very popular. The difference is that it was a good show, the female characters looked like female characters, instead of some androgynous shit, and it didn't intend to push any political narrative.
if the female characters looked female today you'd be all like:
"ooh how can a 90lb woman knock out a 1/2 ton terminator? we need Chuck Norris up in here , then it'd be realistic"
