What do you think the snake and the birds represented?

My guess is the snake is a symbol from her religious upbringing in regards to temptation and repression of both her powers and her true feelings. The birds, I believe, are a symbol of transitioning and renewed perspective.

Snake is Satan finding his way into her = the awakening of her powers suppressed by a conservative upbringing.
Dead birds = shattering of her former high ideals. Dead bird on the movie poster resembles an upturned cross.
