Did Rooney Mara write something on the slip of paper that she stuck in the wall? I looked away briefly and missed that part.

Yes. But nobody knows what it was. Even on the movie set she was the only one who knows and claims to have forgotten what it was.

In the movie, the ghost obviously has some sense of final closure upon reading the note.

Right. Early in the film she says she always does that when moving house. Interesting that the pioneer girl does the same thing with the note under the rock.

....and I see I'm not the only one who thought of Lost In Translation.
