Independent movie about a ghost, but not really a ghost story. Starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara.
A very brief storyline: "Prematurely taken from this Earth, a spectral figure who was once a man makes his way toward his former home."

I saw the thumbnail on Youtube and thought "Rooney Mara is taking a step down and doing cheesy horror-of-the-week I guess", but was surprised that this is a serious drama from the award-winning A24 studio (Moonlight).
It does look interesting. And judging by those highly ecstatic critic quotes (many calling it a classic that will be remembered!), we could even be seeing a Best Picture nominee. Loved the music they used in the trailer as well.
Trailer looks like this could be an existential movie with a ghost in it, observing what could've been, but will never be. The scene with children running around the house seems especially heartbreaking, from ghost's point of view, even though you can't exactly tell from the trailer whose children they are (but you can guess). I loved the music as well.
I really want to see this.
My thoughts exactly. I was curious to see Mara doing some "indie horror" work but after I saw the trailer I'm glad I was wrong. Both Mara and Affleck participated in some strong films last year and now they're going for everything.
I can't wait for this to come.

This is an independent flavor of the week. The subject of the film is like a different pov on grief; sort of like the Lovely Bones. I think if you watch it if you are currently in grief, you might genuinely like or hate it. But this is trying way too hard to be profound. It even has a quote with the word "PROFOUND" in the trailer. If anyone who sees this thinks it's really going to affect their life they are at risk of joining a cult. The only people who are going to talk about it are people in their twenties who are really susceptible to being emotionally overwhelmed and gay older men who pan it and pan anyone who even says something positive about it. You're not going to hear about it at the Oscars or in general. Also Casey Affleck looks exactly like Rooney Mara.

I'm sure the same dismissive attitude existed when the first trailers for Moonlight and Room were shown. I said a BP nomination for A Ghost Story was possible, not guaranteed.
It already has 92% on RT so it's not exactly a slouch in the critical department, and it's not like I said "CHIPs and The Secret Life of Pets will probably be Best Picture nominees." You're acting as if I named the worst possible candidate ever. Many of your complaints about "angsty tumblr feelings" (in your mind) would've applied to Spike Jonze's Her. That was nominated for BP.
I'm not saying it wasn't a good trailer. The trailer was great and they did a good job. But, obviously the trailer is trying to sell the movie and that means nothing. Just because the trailer looks like art it doesn't mean the movie is going to be a work of art. I watched it a bunch of times and that rounded 70s frame with that song drilling into my ears and their "PROFOUND" quote smack in the middle, it was just all so cringe.
So Her was surprisingly good. It was funny and quirky and it tackled an usual subject matter very well so it wasn't all style and no substance.No one would take a review of a trailer seriously as what the quality of the film entails. Her was actually really good.
Anyway this got good reviews and people liked but they said it was really slow and for the most part people didn't love it, except notably gooey softies. The best thing I heard was that it had an interesting take on time.

"A Ghost Story" was shot in the (mostly) pre-1950s "Academy" ratio of 1.33:1, which was also used for television shows until this century. This ratio was seldom, if ever, used for theatrical films during the 1970s, when movies were always, or nearly always wide-screen. Rounded corners are even more rare, in films of any decade. If this movie resembled anything at all, it was an Ektachrome slide.
I just came across the trailer for this on that TrailerAddict site. It does look interesting.

I haven't seen it yet. According to Box Office Mojo, it only plays in Australia and USA for now.
shareThanks for the info. I'm in the US, but in a town with few theatres and for the most part they only show "blockbusters." I'll most likely have to wait a few years to see it, but was curious what those who'd seen it thought.

It's excellent: sad, mesmerizing and amazing! I give it 8.5/10. It's a bit slow, but I loved that. Most people would not, because they have the attention span of a gnat.
