Not a great movie, but I enjoyed it
I just watched this on a whim, I kind of like watching crappy movies, but sometimes I wind up finding a film I kind of like, and this is one of them. Maybe it's just a breath of fresh air compared to how dull modern action films have become, but I just enjoyed a lot of the action set-pieces in this movie, a lot of them had fun gimmicks or took place in fun locations or had limitations on the characters they found creative ways around, which is what I like to see in action movies and this had a lot of them. In terms of acting or story or production values, it's not going to win any awards, the acting was awful, the story was just so disjointed and all over the place and moved at such a breakneck pace across the world that I'm surprised it still made some sense but it felt like 3 completely different movies stuffed into 1 and just jumped around between plots until they all converged in a big fight that had all sorts of crazy things going on. The CGI effects were really bad, but I actually liked the use of practical sets stuffed with details and lighting, so many modern movies look the same to me with super-dark blacks and shadows that obscure a lot of the screen, colour filters that suck out all the colour to a scene and very sparse sets that just feel bland, underutilised and deprive me of any sense of it being a "lived in world", so I'm glad to see this trend kind of reversed for this film, it really looked like a mid-90s goofy action movie, and I mean that in the best way possible, though there was a lot of strange uses of lighting, especially a lot of weird glowing yellow/green light cascading out of dimly lit areas. The acting was also really bad, but it also had Arnold Schwarzenegger playing a captain of the guard in the Tower of London who regularly brawled with the prisoners, so it had its ups and downs.
To me, this really was a "turn your brain off" type film that's just a roller-coaster of constantly shifting ideas and action scenes, and to that extent it was pretty good and an enjoyable watch.
