When the audience didn't laugh or found parts of his dialogue unfunny it almost made the show better. He's obviously not an ass

I saw him a couple months before this special was recorded. It was at a big theatre, same jokes as this special. The place was packed and the crowd was loudly cheering every joke and laughing like lunatics and he still did the whole "Why are you guys pulling back?"
I think it's an editing technique he does to make it sound more awkward then it really is. At this point, nobody is paying that kind of money to see him and be shocked at what he says.
