maybe the John Wick saga is why no one cares about Matrix now?

Finally saw John Wick 3 last night, had it saved on my TV a while (have seen the previous 2 on dvd and was intending to get 3 cheap on dvd too but never got around to it and eventually it was shown on tv)

Anyway the new matrix is doing really bad box office even though there's covid and the HBO stream same day and maybe its bc audiences just want Keanu as John Wick now with each one getting bigger . Its like Wick has overtaken matrix as keanus premiere franchise (even Morphoues is in Wick too) with audiences wishing Matrix 4 had been John Wick 4 which would obviously be unthinkable just a few years ago (despite the 2003 matrix sequels)

The new Matrix film did bad only because there was a major covid scare right around the time it and a bunch of other films came out. That's what hurt it at the box office. And it had been sixteen years since the series ended---that's another reason people probably didn't go to see it---they'd seen it all before, lol.

All Matrix films post the first one also sucks so people didn't have much hope and they were right.

I disagree---the first sequel had its issues, but the third one was pretty good.

The world in general stopped caring about the Matrix after the backlash against the 2003 sequels. Personally I loved them and think people who hate them are mindless dipshits, but what are ya gonna do?

AFAIC, it's obvious Matrix 4 was intended to fail because Lana Wachowski resented Warner Bros pressuring her into it. The Wachowskis didn't want to make it, but WB said they'd just make it without them, so Lana capitulated and deliberately delivered the shittiest Matrix movie she could get past WB execs. I mean, this is all extremely well hinted at in the movie itself.

The original Matrix is still an iconic movie from the 90s but Keanu is better known from John Wick now.
