sure, they could have made more with the idea, but i like the road they took quite a lot.

I would love to have more things explained but on then other hand the mystery left unsolved makes this film even better.
i could not agree more. the thing with this kind of concepts is, that no explanation could live up to leaving it in the open. just take "cube" as another example. even the writer realized that and cut the ending completely out of the film and burned all the material in regards to it.
