Really enjoyed it, just one question! (Spoilers)

Like I mentioned I really enjoyed the film. One thing didn’t really get explained and I wanted to see if anyone here caught something I missed:

What was with the other previous victim’s face and eyes when he is visited by the two detectives? I get him being shocked to see his abuser with the detective who helped him through the case, but his skin was abnormal (was it burns?) and eyes were strange. It cuts to Helen Hunt’s character waking up. Was it a dream? If not, what was up with the guy’s physicality?

i don't think its a dream because its not illogical, there's a good reason why the detectives went to go visit him again, but i can see how the transition to the next scene makes the audience think its a dream. the skin deformation is either something his kidnapper did or something that the victim did to himself afterwards due to trauma

I assumed the boy did it to himself later due to being traumatized, but it wasn’t exactly clear. They should have either explained it more or left that scene out.

It was explained, but briefly.

In a flashback voiceover the kid says he did it to himself "after the treehouse" or something like that.
