I Always Preferred Tiana to Ariel
I know a lot of racists have objected to the casting of a Black woman as Ariel, but my issue was always that Ariel was something of a brat. By contrast, Tiana, Disney's first official Black princess, was a hard-working, resourceful, industrious character.
Unfortunately, in today's neoliberal society, where the DNC/supposedly 'left-wing' political parties are concerned less with working-class solidarity/workers' rights, and more with simply expanding the elite (although not to a degree that it will ever represent more than about 1% of society) so that it encompasses more women and POC, hard work and industry is frowned upon, and many POC, particularly WOC, want the Bridgerton fantasy of being part of the idle, pampered, wealthy elite.
Far be it for me to patronise Black people, but this is the same shit that's been pulled on working-class white people for decades, and is part of the existing elite's divide-and-conquer strategy. Atomise the working-class, make them ashamed to be working-class, and have them fight among each other to join the few remaining spots among the elite.
It's a shame that so many POC seem to reject Tiana, a strong, intelligent, wise and conscientious representation of Black womanhood (in contrast to the blonde, blue-eyed white rich girl bimbo who plays the part of her friend in The Princess and the Frog). Instead of taking pride in these traits, it seems the neoliberal materialist dream of living as a spoiled rich aristocratic bimbo is more alluring.
Shame. I think PRIDE and SENSE-OF-SELF, as represented by a conscientious and admirable woman like Tiana, is far more important than the material comforts enjoyed by spoiled little rich girl Princess Ariel.
Leave the rich girl bimbos to the white folk. Embrace your working-class, salt-of-the-earth, fighting spirit instead! ππΏ
