Daniel Day Lewis was great in this

An outstanding performance. Actually his leading lady and the woman who played his (awful) sister were also excellent.

What a strange film. I just finished watching it.

I liked how sometimes the characters would repeat lines, as we sometimes do in life. Sets and costuming were beautiful. I'll have to let it sink in and settle a bit, but it was an interesting watch, that's for certain.

Not my favorite P.T. Anderson film but it had a certain grace about it. I believe Lewis said that would be his last film.

reply

Which is your favourite? If this was his last film, it was a great performance to go out on. I hope it's not true because I admire his work.

I still need to see this again.

reply

Magnolia is my favorite. There Will be Blood and Boogie Nights are close behind.

reply

I've never seen any of them. No wait, I did see Boogie Nights, but it was so depressing.

reply

Boogie Nights was not a feel-good movie, lol. It's kind of a "guy" movie as well.

reply

Not a feel-good movie is right! πŸ˜„

I just watched the trailer for Magnolia. It looks good! Great cast. I'll give this one a watch. Thanks :)

Highly recommended.

I might watch this one tonight. Amazon Prime is bound to have it.

reply

:( Not available on Prime. Damn, I was all ready to see it tonight. I can't stand Tom Cruise but it looks like he might play a similar character to the one movie I thought he was good in -- Collateral.

reply

I'm a Cruise fan, but fully acknowledge that a lot of times he's just "doin' Tommy" as my wife and I would say. Though, Magnolia is one of his films where he really does act, and IMO, act well. Probably his best.

reply

Better than Collateral? I didn't even recognise him until 10 minutes in. Came in late, channel surfing so didn't know the title, let alone who was in it. Then it was OMG, that's TOM CRUISE! Who knew he could act? πŸ˜„

In Magnolia Tom plays an over-the-top motivational speaker on how to get women to sleep with you. It was perfect for him. One of his lines is "Respect the cock!" LOL.
I've never found it on Netflix or Amazon or streaming at all. I own a copy. Maybe redbox?

reply

Yes, IMO. In fact, I wasn't a huge fan of Collateral. I thought both he and Jamie did fine, but as for the movie itself, it just didn't do a lot for me. I should probably re-watch it though. Only saw it once and was semi-distracted, at times. I don't want to spoil any of Magnolia for you, but let's just say that BuckSwope's description, while accurate, is only part of TC's character and journey. I'm glad they didn't tell you any more.

Three excellent performances. Day-Lewis did indeed claim this to be his last film but I suspect that in a few years time he may be lured out of retirement by a great role - he has stepped away from the limelight before.

But if it is his final time on screen, it is a great performance to bow out on, one of his very best in fact (I think he's much better here than in There Will Be Blood).
