Vicky Krieps' Sudden Luxembourgish Accent

I thought her character was British until she spoke French with the Belgian princess. After that scene she seemed to suddenly have an accent, which I learned after the credits rolled is ostensibly her own Luxembourgish accent. (I'd never seen anything with her before Phantom Thread.) Am I alone here? She definitely didn't omit articles before she met the Belgian princess. Did she only omit an article during the asparagus argument because she was upset and flustered? If I watched it again would I notice she clearly has an accent from the beginning and wonder what the hell I was thinking this time?

I wonder if I just didn't hear her say enough before. I know I can tell a British accent (any of them) from a German or Luxembourgish one. It was like a switch was flipped for me after she talked to the princess. Next chance I get I'll watch at least a few minutes.

Yes I noticed the same thing. At some point of the movie I thought "where did this accent suddenly come from".

It´s perfectly normal for accents and mannerisms to change when one moves to a foreign country. Her character emigrated from Luxembourg, so naturally her accent is going to be somewhat diluted, especially between her work and personal life, and especially coming from a country which has 2 native languages.

Definitely. But why would her accent re-emerge after more time in England?

I’m glad it wasn’t just me! I will watch this one again one day; I liked it a lot, so when I do, I’ll see if I hear the Luxembourgish accent earlier.

She had the accent throughout and was supposed to be from the Continent. After she storms out of the card game party, the hostess remarks about Alma not being British. She says some other snooty remark about not knowing the customs of “her people”, meaning Alma’s former countrymen.

Watch the movie again. Watch Krieps' very first scene, when she's the waitress taking Reynold's breakfast order.

Listen to the first sentence out of her mouth:

"What would you like to order?"

Now, tell me her accent there sounds British rather than Luxembourgish.

I was never confused about her accent, I never noticed it waffling. I haven't reviewed any other scenes yet, but she doesn't sound British at all throughout that entire first scene she's in. Sounds to me like she used her real natural Luxembourg accent.
