What was Arno's story in this? (spoilers)

Unless I missed it, the movie doesn't explain much about why Arno is such a heavy. And the way it ended, with Arno dead, made me wonder how much of a heavy he really was? In the real world, killing your boss like that would mean that the boss's boss would simply kill you in turn, so it doesn't really happen. Unless Arno was just a bit player who hired goons he couldn't control?

That part of ending left me scratching my head. They could have just as easily kept Arno alive.

Pretty strange to kill Arno. I later came to think that Arno was not so high in the organization, and maybe Arno got Howard in with these guys, such that the loansharks/bookies felt that Arno was responsible for this whole mess.

"bit player who hired goons he couldn't control" was my exact thought. He was a small-time loan shark and hired a couple of cheap goons as muscle. They themselves were small-time disloyal hotheads, and the dominant one made the snap decision- "Fuck working for this jackass, we can make more just ripping off his dead brother in law jewel monger here."
