It was always going to be an uphill battle to get a film like this onto the ballot. I haven't seen it yet (it hits Netflix next week I believe) but based on reviews/subject matter and Good Time, this is not an Oscar-friendly movie. I'm actually surprised that so many people seemed to be touting it as a contender.
shareit's a meandering mess of a movie, full of ugly (inside and out) irredeemable characters with a "subverted expectations" tacked on ending.
that's 2+ hours I will never get back.
Having finally seen the movie I can comment a little more...
Sandler is very good in the film but it is not an award-worthy role. I'd say that the Safdie brothers cast him in a role that makes great use of his limited ability - there is really not a lot of range to the character, little more than whiny desperation for two hours.
Which is not to knock the film, which I found impressive - Sandler too, within his limits. But no, this was never going to score with the Oscars.
