Just saw the film

I just saw the last showing of this film a lot Sundance. Needless to say I was not disappointed. As a fan of the book I thought this adaptation was simply breathtaking. I'm not sure I could love it more, maybe only if it were longer. Armie and Timothee had amazing chemistry it was like fire between them. Really truly perfect, feel free to ask me any questions

How much would you rate it on the scale of 1 to 10? How was the pacing in the movie?

reply

Do you think the movie is Oscars worthy? If yes then in what categories will it shine? What important scenes in the book did they include in the book?

I rated it a 10 on IMDb and it's deserves it! Is I was making my own scale perhaps it would be a 9.8. They stay really true to the spirit of the book and it's characters. There are a few changes but it feels right for the story they were telling. I honestly think that it's better this way some of the stuff in the book I don't think would have transferred as well to screen. They added some great scenes, I loved this one where Elio watches Oliver dance to Love My Way it's totally period perfect and sweet. They shorten the trip they together near the end but it's still really nice. The way to movie handled Elio's fathers speech near the end way perfect, everyone in the theater was silent it gripped all of us. The peach scene is in it but it's a little different. Their first kiss scene was so well done as were the sex scenes

The dialogue isn't always taken verbatim except in Elio's fathers speech.

reply

the father's speech is *almost* verbatim. the biggest difference is the last sentence he says which is WAYYY better than the book. something about when you take away the pain, don't take away with it the joy you felt. never liked the "envy you the pain" line.

As for oscar chances it is a little hard to tell. This movie isn't looking for awards there isn't big SPEECHES like in a lot of oscary movies. If the academy falls in love with it like me though I think it will get: best actor for timothee, best supporting actor for who plays his father (forget the name), best picture, adapted screenplay and cinematography. I think it's for sure bet is adapted screenplay

reply

So are there any actual sex scenes or is it more like the afterglow type of scene? Any nudity from Armie or Timothee?

reply

there's extended foreplay so not actual sex but the scene where they first sleep together is one of the best love scenes i've seen in a film, nevertheless. you see armie and timothee from the back but no frontal. it's very tastefully done, sensual, but not too explicitly. you can really sense the passion though the characters have for one another, and the realistic awkwardness too on timothee's part.

reply

From the back means that we can see their buttocks?

reply

How are the kissing scenes? Do they really go for it? When two male actors have a kissing scene rarely do they go all in and instead just kind of mash their faces together...which is annoying af.

reply

I know. I find that kind of performance insincere. Hopefully they do kissing justice in this movie. One good kissing example is the leads in SKAM, they actually use their tongue when kissing!

reply

Yes!!! Also another good example are the actors on Hollyoaks. The guys really go for it. Like, even if there is no tongue it should at least be open mouth..like, do not take on a role if you do not commit 110%, imo.

Also, Dane Dehaan & Daniel Radcliffe went full on makeout with tongue in 'Kill Your Darlings'..that is how it's done!

Ciao,

Peace & Love

The kissing is extremely well done. I'm not sure about tongue in mouth (I'm not paying attention that closely lol...) but I can tell you there's a lot of licking. I know that sounds weird but its either realistically passionate or a function of Elio's cluelessness (I'm still unsure what Luca was going for with that "choreography" lol). Either way, it's believable.

reply

Oh, wow. How was Armie Hammer's dance scene though?

reply

One of my favorite scenes in the movie, it's not much about the dancing, but how much everyone is looking on admiring how cool and carefree he is. The only person unsure in that scene of what they think of Oliver is Elio. Most of it is focused on Elio's face responding to Oliver dancing with another girl, then alone, and then with Elio's friends (who join Oliver while Elio stays back to watch before he finally joins them). You can see Elio's face mostly show contempt/jealousy (for Oliver and/or the girl) but also probably "checking him out" and trying to figure out whether he likes him or not. At least that's how I interpreted it. It's all filled in a 80s dreamy sort of way so its very aesthitcally pleasing.

reply

Thanks for your description of the dance scene. I've heard so much about this scene and I adore "Love My Way" by the Psychedelic Furs. I've actually listened to it a ton lately since hearing it's in the movie. I've been wondering how it was used in the film.
