I thought it was better than part 3.

I thought part 3 sucked balls. And I thought this part would be even worse as in most cases, each installment of a franchise is usually worse than the one before. But I did think that this part 4 was better even though it was still a mess. Part two was pretty decent. But in my opinion, part 1 is one of the best horror movies of the 21st century. It's definitely not perfect, but it does have many genuinely scary images in it. I thought it would have been even better had the comedic elements not been there. I thought that Leigh Whannell's Specs and Angus Sampson's Tucker should have been played straight as the movie up until the point of their introduction was very serious. I felt that their comic relief brought the scariness of the movie down. I prefer scary movies to be straight serious drama. As in The Shining, The Exorcist, The Sixth Sense, Stir of Echoes and the like. I also thought that the gas mask was goofy, and thought that the scene would have been better without that particular prop. I would have been happy with just part 1 being made without any sequels (although part 2 was not bad). Sequels tend to change rules and just make stuff up as they go along. They never stay true to the original concepts. Especially with the continuity of the rules from part one. Elise explained that these entities are trying to enter a human's body in the astral plane in order to gain access to the physical world. Part 3 and part 4 seem to not really relate to that original concept. And then making an endless supply of sequels they always just try to make things bigger and splashier and bolder and those things just end up diluting the original movies. With that said I am still looking forward to part 5 though as Patrick Wilson will be directing and it will be a sequel to part 2. I know I'll probably end up being disappointed though.
