Comedy horror. Minus the comedy and horror.

Oh dear.
I was really looking forward to this but after the first few 5 min I was completely over it.

First off, a wisecracking demon fighter, quite grumpy, would rather be doing something else. Sound like anyone?

Two sidekicks both played for laughs. Kinda tough lady. Useless guy.

It's ash v the evil dead lite.
Light on comedy, light on horror.
Ash works, the horror is over the top and gore filled. The comedy is dark and so bad it's great.

Stan is definitely trying for the same market, but it's just not in the same league too little horror, tiny amounts of gore, and poor old John c really seems to force those wisecracks out.

I have little hope for this so far, but if anyone's listening. Let John off the chain make him an angry demon stomping mother. Up the gore immensely and kill off the two sidekicks and replace them.

Whoever is on script duty is really going to have to work hard to pack this into 30 min, at the minuite it feels really like a few ideas thrown together, connected with some terrible set pieces.

I can't remember the last time I burned something this bad based on one episode, but I'd like to see John in this kind of role, and if it doesn't get better in a real big hurry, I don't see it going anywhere.

The reason Ash vs The Evil Dead has more horror is because it's on Starz, not basic cable

Well, that's a rather specious argument since both "Walking Dead" series are on basic cable. Perhaps you meant more gore?

IFC can show whatever they want its completely uncensored just like Starz or any other movie channel so that excuse as to why this show is crap doesn't apply

reply

Completely agree op. And there are some broadcast networks ( primarily NBC ) who show a lot of gore. This was PG at best.

reply

I second (third, actually) that, OP. After watching The Walking Dead's new season premier, gore/blood/guts can apparently be used by the bucketloads, so IFC really doesn't need to do a lite version of Ash v. Evil Dead.
Get on with it, make it as big as they can on primetime cable, or get off the pot, because in it's current state, it's *beep* dangling above the toilet. And we all hate those danglers, no?

reply

Just watching the first few minutes of the show should give you clear indications on the "quality" of the show.

It's bad, literally everything is bad, maybe with the exception of the main lead guy, he was kinda good actually. The over the top humor that often just falls flat, the poor cgi, that woman looked better *without* the poor zombie makeup. They should have just kept it like that but it wouldn't have made much difference.

This shows tries to be Ash vs Evil dead and I don't know why they would even attempt that in the first place? It's not like Ash vs Evil dead is a huge success? I enjoy Ash vs Evil dead a lot more than this crap tho, that's for sure. It actually has very good CGI for a TV show and Ash is just Ash and he doesn't need to be more than that.

reply

I actually did a bit of work on ash series 2. There are loads of practical effects in it, That's why it looks so good. I can't believe stan looked so bad, but a short run time and rushed cgi certainly didn't help it. The peeling off skin was especially bad. I would still forgive it if the script was ok tho, I mean most of the shows I love start with terrible effects and a good script.

Agreed!

Second episode was funnier than the first (not difficult), particularly the Jaws references. It might actually grow on me if it keeps it up.

Meanwhile AvED has been slaying it this season.

I'll watch them all. Seriously you have no idea what it used to be like twenty years ago when there were only one or two genre shows. Now there's one at least every day of the week.

reply

Yeah, ans as a result, I can't watch most of them, because I can only watch a screen during the week for so damn long. There's at least 4 superhero shows I'd like to watch, to say nothing of probably another 3-4 shows I wish I'd watched.

It's a trip to think about how much genre TV we have now. Also how it even can deliver the gore etc that we thought only possible in movies. I remember having to try and get fixes from Friday The 13th the series and stupid shlt like that in the 80's. Also, now we get several superhero/comic based movie's a year! I know not all of them are good but I hope they keep coming.
Ash vs Evil Dead is indeed bringin' it strong with the pimp hand. Loving it.

Taped it just to see if it was any good. Nope, most unfunny thing I've seen in ages. Didn't even crack a smile, much less laugh.

The lead guy from scrubs is like a comedy vacuum in everything except the occasional line in scrubs, I just don't find guy talented. Hes not very good in serious movies either, I forgot he was in platoon when I was rewatching it the other day and he stick out like a sore thumb compared to the other cast.

reply

Yep I watched the final show, and I have to be honest I don't think I'm going to change one word of my first review.
