Why Does Everyone Speak Like Aliens from Another World?

This whole film reminded me of a dramatic version of Third Rock from the Sun. They all sound like aliens who don't understand how to disguise themselves as humans properly, from the wooden, monotonic delivery, to the socially inept conversation (for example, mentioning to your colleague at a cocktail party that your daughter's period started).

I was actually surprised to find out they weren't aliens. How could this possibly be a stylistic choice by the filmmakers? This is the kind of result I would expect if robots without proper understanding of humans made a movie. Almost like those weird A.I. commercials that have been popping up lately.
