Nothing's lamer than critical dogpiling

I have no dog in this fight (pun fully intended). I just think that critic dog piling is so lame. It's basically a circle jerk of critics who collectively decide that a movie is going to be the worst ever in the history of cinema, and then take turns writing shitty reviews trying to outdo each other in wittiness but just get lamer with every new joke.

It reminds me of this that Oscar Wilde skit in Monty Python, where Wilde, Whistler and Shaw are trying to impress one of the royals with witty cracks but the cracks get shittier, so they start blaming each other.

C'mon, it's a weird movie with an ugly look to it, plus it's plot-less and that doesn't translate well to cinema, that's why this is happening.

reply

Yes, just from a visual standpoint it's bizarre nightmare fuel.

reply

But wouldnt that make it a good movie then?

reply

So a critic should not criticize an awful movie because other critics are doing it too? What a moronic take.

reply

you do realize that people have jobs to do, yes? spare us your self-important soap box

reply

I'm assuming you're referring to the critics here. That they do their jobs and the manner in which they do them are two separate things. That said, few jobs are as ignoble as that of the critic.

Atomicgirl, I totally agree with the principle... In this case, I'm half way there with you and the other half is willing to make an exception.

reply

criticizing critics. how noble.

reply

It is noble and beautiful to say so, because it's absolutely true, and truth is beauty.

The critic is the absolute lowest, most useless and villainous element in the whole dynamic of the arts. Everyone who worked on Cats is an angel compared to the critic. Even the lowest PAs on Cats are doing something much better with their lives.

Those of us who create are superior to those who merely criticize. Most pompous sounding thing I could ever say, and meanwhile, the most real. 🙂

reply

it's not real. because in life, anyone who has a brain is a "critic." these are entertainment writers. they are not fraudsters, con men, or murderers.

there are far worse things to be than a critic, but thanks for your two cents.

reply

Yes there's always a deeper circle of hell.

I'm referring specifically to professional critics in the arts, and in particular those who are not also active creators themselves.

Everyone is completely right to have opinions about things and give critiques and analyses, absolutely. It's those who make their living doing so who choose to situate themselves in the dregs.

reply

I don't think you understand what a "soapbox" is, but kudos for using a term above your grade level; your fourth grade teacher, Miss McGillicuddy, will be proud.

reply

thank you for demonstrating what's "lamer than critical dogpiling" you self-righteous twit.

reply

You're welcome, mental patient. I'm calling you a mental patient, because you've completely misread my earlier comments and are trying to make them more than they are.

I said that I thought the dog piling was lame, because the critics just become increasingly corny as they try to outdo each other. I don't know what that has to do with "soapboxes" or being "self righteous," but you keep dribbling away in cuckoo land while struggling out of your strait jacket.

reply

you're calling me "mental patient" because you're an angry, dumpy internet sloth who takes pleasure in speaking down to people. perhaps if you felt more "in control" in your day to day life, you wouldn't feel the need.

ah, but your lack of self-esteem isn't *really* my problem, now is it?

> struggling out of your strait jacket.

I've never seen the critics enjoy themselves so much!

Hell, reading the reviews has got to be more fun than the actual movie.

Way, way true. The movie is the manure from which grew an Eden of laffs.

reply

HAVE YOU SEEN IT???

if so, please join the dogpile of bad reviews! Just for me!

reply

It's also a 2.7 on IMDb. There's obviously something bad about this.

Every once in a while theres a film that critics sense is going to be like a 'Cats' that when it comes out they have fun tearing to shreds and goes on to bomb/underperform and do big at the Razzies- ones that come to mind - Catwoman, Waterworld, Lone Ranger, Star Trek V, Batman & Robin, Dark Phoenix, BvS/Justice League, Cruise Mummy.. and theres a few they circle around thinking its going to bomb/end up another disaster but it completely blows everything way and becomes a huge event (Titanic, Avatar)

This Cats is a biggie though ... biggest one in a while for critics to really get their teeth into

reply

If most critics find the movie to be bad, what do you expect them to do? Should they lie? Should they abstain from reviewing it? The responsibility is the film makers' to make a good film. The majority of critics agree that they have failed. It's their job to say so.
