Wonder if it has anything to do with their religion or anything... just the way Ed and Gordon talks would've just given them away off the bat after being questioned.

I also wonder how Gordon knew how to fly the destroyer. I mean they hardly know of the culture let alone knowing how to fly the shuttle in such a short order.

We don't really know how much time passed overall between the time they defeated the ship and their departure. Maybe there was an intensive study of the shuttle's controls before they left.
