Pleasantly surprised ! It takes going old school to an all new level!

I'll be honest, I am starting to be disappointed by Star Trek Discovery because it feels more like that Battlestar Galactica remake then Star trek. I mostly grew up on Star Trek Voyager and a bit of DSN and Voyagers reruns for time to time and I really was looking forward a new Trek that would capture that old spirit of these shows but the guys behind discovery did not want to give us the old Trek , they are looking to reinvent it by making it gritty, darker, more realistic. They have a Captain that shouts at his crew, A crew that keep arguing with each other and the writers goes on in interviews stating that their Take on trek is refreshing but I think it's not...If I want to see darkness, people fighting and things like that I will just turn on the news...I want escapism, optimism, a likable crew, I am OK with social commentaries for time to time until the show stay light enough. The Orville is the most Star trek show I have seen since voyager ended all these years ago. Yes, there is more humor but it never overpower the storytelling. The cast of characters are likable and I love the episodic feel, you can watch one episode without feeling lost and confused. It make me wish it was part of the Trek universe instead of Discovery to be fair.

CBS doesn't get it. They think Star Trek was popular because of Klingons, starships and space battles. They think you'll like Star Trek:Dreary because that's what it contains with "better" special effects.

Roddenberry had a vision to create an optimistic future when reality consisted of racism, sexism, famine, war, disease, the Cold War. Trek was showing us that we would have a brighter future together. The social commentary was a way for us to think about what was taking place at the time and move us closer to that future.

At least the fans get it including MacFarlane.

I just hope that enough people watch the Orville :( Apparently ratings went down this week. It makes me sad because if this is cancelled due to low ratings that would be the death of that type of old school Sci-Fy and it will probably never come back again...

reply

I read the opposite, ratings went up for Oct 12. They also will update the ratings in a few days when they count On Demand and the internet viewings.

"At NBC, “The Good Place” and “Great News” were even with last week, but “Superstore” (1.1, -0.1), “Will & Grace” (1.7, -0.3) and “Chicago Fire” (1.1, -0.1) were down. “The Orville” (1.0) rose a tenth for FOX, but “Gotham” slid a tenth to 0.8."

The new klingon scenes are boring. I just want to fast forward through them but I keep thinking a plot point is going show up. But then it doesn't. I don't care about the klingons. There lame.

reply

That's exactly how I felt when I watched the first episode. They just had the Klingons basically saying the same thing throughout the show which any writer knows to always advance the plot during each subsequent scene. I finally gave up reading the subtitles and then fell asleep during the last part of episode one. I watched later episodes and nothing seems to have changed. Maybe it has, but I stopped caring and refuse to read any more subtitles. The "creatives" behind it should be fired. I bet they will be.

That's the way I feel. The world is screwed up enough that when I finally get home and put on the tube, I want to be entertained in a way that's enjoyable and relaxing, so I don't watch much intense programming.

I was also disappointed in Discovery. I watched three and I'm out.

Instead of calling this star trek discovery they should have just went ahead with the plans for section 31. The tone and darkness seem to match the direction that show was going for.

Completely agree and well said.

I know yes! I was surprised too, they've gone to some effort to make it a proper production capable of reaching those heights. So far this show is a gem. It's not perfect, but every episode has been entertaining and unique so far.

>> gritty, darker, more realistic.

I'm assuming that you do not mean it is more realistic because it is gritty and darker.

But, having seen a few episodes, I'd call it a bomb already.

I don't know why people OK with tinkering with the basic ideas of Star Trek. It's like when a giant corporations buys a favorite cherished brand and then makes the package smaller and adulterates it with cheap ingredients ... it is a fraud, cheating.

BUT, I do think the "humor" in "The Orville" is just not funny. It is sophomoric and stupid, but nothing is perfect right out of the gate, so maybe it will get better. I have not really enjoyed the episodes except for the last one about the plusses and minuses.

Because the peeps running STD now are not Trek fans and do not understand Trek. Naturally all they want to do is a leverage buyout of some of its characters and then change everything else to the way they like it.

It's really stupid because after 50 years on Trek there are still lots of writers and producers who worked on real Trek who should be helming this show, but instead they brought in people who only worked on the JJ movies, or no Trek at all.

I blame Moonves, who reportedly can't tell the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars.
