Thoughts on pilot!?

I was really hoping this would be good. Maybe drawing off uncharted or Indiana Jones.

Unfortunately I couldn't stop cringing at it all the way through mainly because of the incredibly cheesy dialogue ('that's no way to treat a lady!') But also because of the caricatures for characters, I mean evil French guy, super British 'lady', misunderstood rough around the edges but with a secret heart of gold hero! I laughed out loud when he gave all that money to the church at the end! It was such incredibly bad writing.

Plus the story was just weird, they almost immediately and way too easily found the lost city of gold, just had to take a boat down the river a little bit from a local settlement. Then almost got killed by the French guy and jumped in the river to escape. The next thing we know everyone's home. Did they go back to the city? It didn't seem like it. Why couldn't they retrace their steps!?! It's a city made out of gold!! I would spend years looking for it! Especially as they know pretty much know where it is!
Maybe I missed something there....

It would seem that this show was created by a team of people around a desk with a check list of boxes to tick to create a 'successful show. I'll probably give it one more episode to see if it gets any better, I'm not overly hopeful though.

Yup, every cliché you can think of is in there, the writing is just terrible. When I heard one of them say "You'll never get away with this", I decided I would not be watching the second episode.

.

You say cliché I say racism:

The french is a traitor; the natives are savages;
the fence is a prostitute in a favela; and the
white man was not trying to steal anything,
since he has a heart of gold! Disgusting!

You know, there was a lot of cliché but I still kinda enjoyed it. I'm not the type of viewer who is fussed at cliché when it kinda part of the show's humour. The only problems I did have and would say needs improving is the cuts and edits. Some felt very obtuse and just didn't fit well. I'd say if they improved that and aspects of the writing, they'd have a pretty fun show on their hands. I'll continue watching.

I enjoyed it too. It doesn't take itself too seriously and it was fun in a Romancing The Stone sort of way.

If Hooten and the Lady was on Nick Junior then it would be fine.
But it's not, it's supposedly for grown ups.
Compare it to any of the greats of modern TV like Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Game of Thrones, Narcos, Walking Dead and numerous others and it just looks farcical.
It's like the people that made Sharknado doing a TV series, only Sharknado was more entertaining.

If companies MUST make chronically bad TV then so be it, but this show obviously cost a fair bit of money. What with the various international locations and dodgy CGI, which makes it all the more annoying.
If you've got money to spend make something worth watching!

"If Hooten and the Lady was on Nick Junior then it would be fine." yeah um, minus the completely irrelevant and unnecessary nudity and language that is. otherwise, if you're into the genre, a decent fun little show for what it is.

Absolute rubbish. A total rip off of Romancing the Stone even down to the joint tumble down the hill. So Fawcett was a Victorian explorer who vanished in 1925? Victoria died in 1901.Did anyone actually go into a real jungle? You need more than a T shirt and a pair of jeans, and as for carrying your water supply in a 500ml plastic bottle - you cannot be serious. The amount of miles covered by that boat with one can of fuel was incredible - what did you do - water it down?

I notice they had to have the now common black actor placed in a very senior position and they even managed to get in the homosexual angle by making the tribe bi-sexual!

Total garbage and not worth the watching.

After 15 minutes I was deep into in my iPad having lost all interest.

Dialogue was fit for CBeebies.

It's that man again!!

reply

it was entertaining except:
bisexual indian tribes
female lead being a 'Lady'
male lead 'donate' money to the church

I like it

enjoyed it but it is absolutely awful. A lot wrong with it!

Essentially its childs tv for manchildren/ladykids. Relic Hunter all over again, though I am unsure as to who is wearing the pants in this one but for sure Lovibond is way too young to play an Indiana/the chick from Relic, though she gives it some welly.

My other thought is that some posh London chick is never in a billion years going to go jungle trek, shes barely going to know anything exists outside North London (and that goes for posh guy equivalent too). SHe'd break a nail five minutes from the airport and be on the next flight home for an emergency nailbar appt. Some more background on her character to beef her up would make us believe that she'd had more adventure than a boringly untalented posh university rowing club.

On plus side, she looks a bit like that posh oxford chick tv ancient history presenter with the big umm.
