do bowling alleys really come with those guard rails to prevent gutter balls? that's lame af

Yes, all lanes have rails, and it's common to see people put them up for kids.

There's not a kid side. All the lanes have rails, but you have to make an effort to put them up.

They're hidden by default.

that's all very swell and all... but my problem is once you start playing with these "rails" you learn to fail instead of actually learning how to bowl

Yes they do. My kids have used them before. They are usually meant for and used by kids younger than the boy in the movie.
